This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when the couple relocate from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the kind of problems that arise in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
