A recent study reveals that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the way of the injections explains the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
