Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The anticipation about this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team might be building a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously flexible, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
