Department of Justice Intervenes in Legal Challenge to Block the State of California's New Electoral Map

Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.

This court case, filed in federal court, targets the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.

"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.

Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.

"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.

Constitutional Challenge

The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.

"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.

Political Context

The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.

Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.

Wider Consequences

The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.

The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
